Ministry of Textiles makes a beginning - floats Tableaux on Indian Handicrafts this Republic Day
Ministry of Textiles adds a feather in its cap and marks a beginning this 2012 by floating aTableaux on Indian Handicrafts at the Republic Day parade for the first time. It is indeed an achievement and matter of immense pride to have the tableaux selected. The Ministry of Defence selected the Indian Handicraft Tableaux along with 9 others, out of the 25 Ministries that applied for display of tableaux during republic day parade. The Indian Handicrafts Tableaux will be no. 14 in the order of march at the parade. Through this tableaux, the theme of Indian Handicrafts is portrayed and the tableaux conveys that while Indian handicraft sector is an unorganized, labour intensive decentralized industry, it provides employment to over 7 million artisans in rural and semi-urban areas. Handicrafts form a substantial part of Indian exports and their share in the exports is increasing each year. Not only has Handicrafts sector emerged as one of the most important foreign exchange earners for India on a sustained basis but has also progressed in terms of product range, number of companies and value of exports has been tremendous. Handicraft exports touched Rs. 10,534 crores in the year 2010-2011 while production was worth Rs. 17, 557 crores in the same year. The tableaux will showcase the complete process of sourcing, manufacturing, retailing&exportofhandicraftsindifferentapproaches. The tableaux will also consist of 10 artisans giving live demonstration of their craft work as well as 32 other crafts and craft items.
It was due to the focus on this sector and the importance of the role that it plays in the life of the country and of the artisans themselves that the Defence Ministry appreciated and approved the tableaux. The tableaux has been conceived and designed by National Centre for Design and Product Development, a national level design centre set up by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India to fill up the gap in the areas of design & product development in Indian Handicrafts Sector.
During the last few decades, there has been tremendous diversification, product innovation, product adaptation and product development made in nearly all types of raw material bases for handicrafts. Products now being produced and exported are not only gifts and decoratives but a whole lot of utility items forming an important part of lifestyles. In fact, many of these items are so important that usage of the same makes a fashion and status statement. Jewellery in the past was mostly traditional, high value studded and hand crafted. Now handcrafted jewellery is produced in contemporary designs and is exported.

Dancing for a CauseSun, Agni (Fire), Vayu( Air), Jal(Water), Bhoomi(Land) &Aakash( Sky) are the natural energy resources we got and our presence on this earth is dependent on these resources. Our ancient vedas and rituals preach us the need of preserving the important energy resources. In fact even some of our festivals are designed as a thanks giving measure to these resources. Tamil festival PONGAL is one of those festivals which is based on natural energy worship. The pot made of Soil [representing earth] is kept on cook stove [representing fire] in a open place [ representing sky]. Milk & Water [ representingJal] is used for cooking and the steam coming out of this cooked Pongal [representing Vayu] is then dedicated to the Sun god. In this way our ancestors defined the ways and means to worship the nature and the energy.Taking this a step forward, in order to create an awareness on preserving the natural resources by doing our best, Avvai Tamil Sangam& Charitable Society and The Great India Place join hands together in this Awareness campaign to Save Energy – The power to power up the world”. Mirror Image Man' with multiple talents
Piyush Goel: 'Mirror Image Man' with multiple talents
Young Piyush Goel(Dadriwala) has a rare feat to his credit. He has written the world's first Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta in mirror image. Piyush says, "It is the first Bhagwad granth in the world written in mirror image. I wrote the epic in my own hand writing in two languages, Hindi and English. One can read all the 18 chapters and 700 verses in front of a mirror." The feat certainly shows the will power of a man who put everything readable in front of a mirror. He says, "Since my childhood I had a strong desire to copy everything in front of a mirror. Though I was not sure to achieve this uncommon art, yet I did it." He recalled how an accident had changed his life. I met with a serious accident in year 2000 and remained in bed for a long time. At that time I had developed this art, he reveals. A resident of Kaushambi, Piyush is now known as 'Mirror Image Man' and recently he was honored with Holder Republic Award for this novel achievement.
ABOUT PIYUSH
He is a mechanical engineer working in a private firm of Greater Noida, Dadri. Collecting unusual things is also his passion. He says, "I came in contact with a bank employee in the year 1982. He was a stamp collector. I was very fascinated by this habit and I started collecting various stamps and currencies of different countries." Later I started collecting match boxes, cigarette packets, pens, coins, currencies and autographs of celebrities, he adds. He has rare collection of autographs of great people like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachan including several national and international personalities. About this particular habit he says, "I love to meet celebrities and collect their signatures. Though it is time consuming, for me it is like getting inspiration. Presently, he has a rich collection of various items. "Initially my family members used to get irritated by my habit since it is difficult to keep everything in a house. After seeing my craze and social recognition now my kids also help in preserving my collections".
BODY OF WORK
Apart from Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta he has written Shree Durga Sapt Satti in Sanskrit language, Sunderkand, Arti Sangrah and Shree Sai Sachcharitra (all 51 chapters, 308 pages, more than one lakh words). He has written a book on Mathematics, which is a juggle for most of mathematicians. He informs, "I am very fond of Mathematics, I have done a lot of work on Mathematics, like Points Design of Pyramid and Equations, work on Pascal Triangle, A new triangle 'AP Right Angled Triangle' in which I have introduced a new strange Table and formula for two digits and Number Nine." It is very interesting way to understand the complications of Mathematics. The book is going to be published in the future," he adds.
FUTURE PLANS
Since his hand-written Bhagwad Geeta is to be adopted by Krishna museum of Kurukshetra University, he is feeling proud of the achievement. He accepts, "It is a fact that no one is going to read this holy book in front of a mirror but I have great satisfaction by writing an image of those great holy words and compiling them into a complete granth. I will continue with this writing and in the future write more holy books". "People often ask me what would I do with these strange collections. I simply prove my point by organizing several exhibitions in various schools of Ghaziabad and Noida. My works and collections are informative for students and I have received so many invitations from schools and museums. So far as awards are concerned I never do anything for the sake of any awards or remuneration. Though I have various recognitions and awards I don't like to mention them since I have a noble mission to preserve things for the future generation," he concludes

While presenting the Awards, the Minister said that the system of export awards is a conduit not only for increasing exports but very importantly alleviating poverty and uplifting economically backward classes, generating employment and earning foreign exchange and encouraging tourism. The Ministry of Textiles is behind the Handicrafts Sector to provide full support in terms of policy, initiatives and incentives.
She lauded the efforts of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) and EPCH for developing awareness amongst the exporting community on various system and procedures prevalent in the world market particularly relating to compliances i.e. statutory, social and environmental requirements of the international buying companies.
Ms. Lakshmi also informed that EPCH and National Centre for Design and Product Development (NCDPD) with their joint efforts will display for the first time a Tableau on Handicrafts during 63rd Republic Day Parade at Rajpath.
The Minister further said that to tap the unexplored market, recently EPCH organized live demonstration of craftspersons in Malaysia during Intexpo. Also a successful 4th Festival of India was organized in Argentina in Latin American Market.
Handicrafts is very important component of India’s export trade, its economy and social fabric. The fact that more than 70 lakh artisans and craft persons coming from economically and weaker strata of the society are employed by the handicraft exporting community is an indicator of the role played by handicrafts exports for the upliftment of the down trodden and in alleviation of poverty.
In fact, many more millions are also connected with the handicrafts business in various other processes like dyeing, processing, finishing, packaging, transportation etc. who earn their livelihood from the sector. The fact that Indian Handicrafts have regional linkages with ethnic, tradition, system, techniques, skills, religion and culture, these products do spread India’s rich culture in various parts of the world which inspires many tourists to visit India thereby generating tourism, she added.
Ms. Rita Menon, Secretary, Textiles, said that the Council is playing a very active role in increasing exports from the country by holding handicrafts festivals and Buyers and Sellers Meets in many countries.

Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) S.S. Gupta said that handicrafts is a huge market and India has abundance of raw material, skills and technology, still the exports is less than two per cent in the world market. New products, designs and technology should be used to increase India’s market share in the global market.
Mr Gupta stressed the need for creating a brand image and explore new markets for increasing the share. EPCH is one of the best councils and organizes handicrafts fairs in February and October where more than 4,000 foreign buyers visit and source their requirements.

The export awards were instituted by EPCH in the year 1989 with the objective to create a sense of healthy competition within the exporting community to achieve more and more so that ultimately exports of handicrafts continue to grow year after year. The export awards over the years have shown very satisfactory results and, in fact, has been one of the major factors for the sustained and impressive growth of exports of handicrafts, informed Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH).
The export awards have become symbol of recognition amongst the exporters and has also become an important land mark of achievement for the importing community as by and large importing community prefers to source their requirement from an award winner. Export awards have also helped winning companies to do better and better in future and also inspire others to achieve similar recognition in future so that they also obtain a distinct identity, he added.
M/S C. L. Gupta Exports Ltd. of Moradabad is receiving Top Export Award (All Handicrafts) for 2009-10 & 2010-11.

The certificates of merits are given for excellence in export growth and for regional performance under different product categories, elaborated Mr. Rakesh Kumar.
Handicrafts is an important segment of the India’s export basket. The importance of Handicrafts is in three ways viz. promoting Indian heritage and culture, arts and crafts world wide and, thereby, encouraging tourism, generating foreign exchange through exports of various types of handicrafts, opening up of employment opportunities for the artisans and craft persons engaged in production of hand crafted products. Such artisans and craftpersons predominantly belong to economically weaker and socially backward section of the society.
The exports of handicrafts have been growing on an annual growth rate of 15-20% till 2008 when the exports declined due to recession in the world market. However, the exports started picking up at the rate of 14% during the last two years. In the first seven month of the current fiscal, the exports have grown at 21 per cent as compared to last year.

The turn up of the speakers was equally awesome as they were all famous personalities like Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, the bollywood film-maker, Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, the father of rural marketing and founder MART, Mr. Sanjay Trehan, CEO, MSN India, Ms. Julianne Wurm, Founder R3, New York; Mr. Shivendra Chauhan, Volunteer at India Against Corruption; Mr. Ajay Jain, a traveller, author, photographer & blogger; Jitendra Agarwal, CEO, Sarthak Educational Trust; Ms. Shubhra Chaturvedi, Artist & photographer; Ms. Manisha Ahlawat, Managing Partner & CEO, Rose Red Lifestyle LLP Master Franchisee, Vivafit; Mr. Ajit Sharma, Founder AWC Industries; and Mr. Mohak Mathur gave wonderful TEDTalks on freedom.
Mahesh Bhatt started his talk with a question for audience to think over "are you free ?" and differentiated the sourced meaning of freedom from the real freedom individuals experience. He talked about man's quest for permanence in life. He said every individual wants his pains to vanish quickly and pleasure to last forever. According to him the idea of ultimate freedom is a lie which the mankind has been told. He told the story of a parrot trapped by the king in golden cage then being taught the lessons of freedom. The parrot in the story crams up the lessons of freedom well but never himself experienced freedom from cage even after he died. With this the bollywood film-maker talked about the way human beings have all the sourced knowledge of freedom but never experienced themselves. He said generally humans have learned fascinated phrases of freedom but never experienced the one. He quoted instances from his own life and linked freedom to the pleasure as a human being.
Mr. Sanjay Trehan, CEO, MSN India; linked freedom to invention of internet. He started his TEDTalks with the following quote from the nobel laurette Dr. Amartya Sen, " Development can be seen it is argued here, as a process of expanding the real, freedoms that people enjoy today." He talked about 'Peer to Peer communication" briefly quoted as P2P communication that advent of internet has made an individual's voice louder than it has ever been. He discussed how in just four years internet has expanded so fast to a huge user base that took thirty years for radio and ten years for television to get. He talked about how an individual is moving away from physical construct of the world to more a mental construct where he focuses more on his mental economy to grow with desires and empowerment. He told how internet has given individuals both personal & social freedom, so that whatever he wants to express to the world with the help of a single click and faster mode, he can publish it on internet and express it to as many people as he wants. An individual has actually got freedom of speech. then he also talked about how internet is shaping social forces.
Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, Founder MART, popularly known as father of rural marketing started his talks with instances from his own life. He told the audience how he followed his heart and left a lucrative corporate life to pursue his desire to work towards social empowerment. He talked about 'freedom from poverty for rural women' and told how the real life conditions with those women are and how MART helps in empowering them to overcome their hurdles towards development. He said women in rural India face lack of mobility, lack of education that result in lack of empowerment, low and irregular income, less productions so no economies of scale when it comes to compete the big retail brands, their lack of access to resources & market. He threw some light on how rural woman, who tries to earn her livelihood with domestically produced products, is cheated in terms of weight of the agriculture produce. He shared their real life problems when they have to compete with big retail brands for their agricultural produce and other domestically produced goods in the market. He told how MART operates to empower them and get them access to the market by providing these village people a value addition. He also told audience how these women are trained in doing business. He talked about 'Project Shakti' by Unilever & co-founded by MART. He said all that that India needs is a business mind with a social heart.
Mr. Ajit Sharma had one of the most entertaining TEDTalks where he talked about some communities in Rajasthan who spent time keeping a record of their patrons and their activities of the past. He talked about how that community used to keep contacting their relatives & other community members on a regular basis. He talked about this basic need of humans to keep in touch with the society around him, especially his loved ones and that's what freedom means to him. On the other hand, he shared some of his knowledge about the websites that help individuals keep sending messages to their loved ones and friends after their death. This was an entertaining TEDTalk enjoyed by most of the audience.
The other TED speakers for the day also gave wonderful talks like Mr. Ajay Jain talked about how travelling gives him freedom in true sense, Ms.Manisha Ahlawat talked about creating women only spaces, that gives some kind of freedom to women and she also quoted example from Delhi metro, Mr. Mohak Mathur talked about short films, Ms.Shubhra Chaturvedi quoted her life experience to explain what freedom means to her, Dr. Julianne Wurm talked about learning and questioned the importance of degree certificates saying they sometimes hamper freedom to learn.
One of the most inspiring TEDTalk was by Dr. Jitendra Agarwal, who himself was a dentist by profession but had to change his profession due to sudden vision impairment. He talked about helping physically deficient people to earn their livelihood by providing them training. This was truly inspirational for audience present there, as to nothing is impossible in life. He shared his own experience of life how he struggled to train himself and work on computer as general people. At the end there was an awesome performance by artists group Sharma Sisters.
During the entire event various other TEDTalks were being played and simultaneously the tweeters & bloggers were updating the external world about the minute to minute updates of the event. Thus the entire event was awesomely enjoyed by the audience and it was a grand success.
